If you’re enjoying your current assignment, you may be thinking about how to make the work permanent. To achieve this goal, you’ll need to talk to your manager – especially if your contract is about to end.
While it can feel intimidating to talk to your manager about extending your contract, doing so can also be a smart move.
Here’s how to set yourself up for success:
1. Schedule a meeting.
Ask your manager if you can schedule a meeting, and let them know why: “I’d like to talk to you about possibly extending my contract.”
By setting a meeting time, you give both yourself and your manager the chance to imagine what a contract extension would look like. During this time, both of you can think about how to address potential problems and create a future that works for you both.
2. Emphasize what you’ve gained.
Start the meeting by thanking your boss for the opportunity to learn and grow with the company. Emphasize one or two things you’ve learned to do on the job that you believe you do really well – or that your boss has complimented you for doing well in the past.
For example, you might begin by saying, “First of all, thank you for the opportunity to work with this team. I’ve been more motivated to succeed here than in any other job, and I’ve really appreciated the chance to learn Salesforce inside and out.”
3. Talk about what you can offer the team if you stay.
Your manager may have a number of questions about extending your contract. But the most important will be “What would keeping this person on the team do for us?”
Answer this question by focusing on how your continued work with the team would benefit the team and the company. For example, you might say “Now that I’m so well-versed in Salesforce and how it supports our team’s work, I’d appreciate the opportunity to fine-tune its application here. I’m sure I could help the entire team do better work on the platform if I stayed.”
