Looking for a job is hard work, and the uncertainty involved can zap even the most dedicated job seeker’s motivation from time to time. If your job search has hit a “slump,” here’s how to pull it back together and renew your enthusiasm:
- Remember why you’re here. Why did you enter this career in the first place? What did you love about it? What came easily to you? What do people ask you questions about or compliment you for? Make a list of these items and place it in a prominent location, such as the wall above your computer. Refer to it every time you sit down to work on your job search.
- Refocus your search. Use your list of reasons you love your work and are good at it to refocus your job search. Instead of producing cover letters and resumes for every job posting with the right title, start hunting for postings that prioritize exactly the skills and traits that you’re best at, that you find easy, or that you are complimented for again and again. Look for companies that emphasize these traits and abilities in their mission statements and corporate cultures as well. You’ll stand out as a great “fit” for their company as well as applying to places you’d love to work.
- Revive your passions. If it’s been a while since you used your professional skills, find a volunteer position that tackles a topic you’re passionate about and that uses those abilities. For instance, you might volunteer as treasurer for your weekend softball team or tackle marketing for the local animal rescue’s next fundraiser. You’ll keep your skills sharp and meet new people who can vouch for your passion, enthusiasm, and abilities – and who might be able to offer solid job leads.
- Talk to a recruiter. Recruiters who specialize in your career field know the local job market inside and out – including all the opportunities that haven’t been made public or that you may have overlooked. Your staffing partner can help keep you on the right track to a great job.
