St. Paul Career Spotlight: Electric/Mechanical/Medical Assembler

Modern medical science and practice are increasingly complex. While doctors and nurses still play key roles, the work of creating, assembling, and distributing essential medical devices and equipment falls to workers in other fields.

One such job is that of assembling medical devices, which often include both mechanical and electrical components. These assemblers play an essential role in ensuring medical devices are available to those who need them.

What Does an Electric/Mechanical/Medical Assembler Do?

Medical device assemblers specialize in understanding exactly how a particular device or range of devices works. They may test these devices in addition to putting them together. When it comes to assembly, the assembler specializes in understanding exactly how to put each device together in order to meet specifications.

The number and type of medical devices assemblers work with can vary dramatically depending on the position and company. For example, assemblers may specialize in creating pacemakers, hip and knee replacements, braces, or any other medical devices.

What Skills Do I Need to Become an Electric/Mechanical/Medical Assembler?

Typically, companies seeking medical device assemblers look for candidates with a high school education at a minimum. A few years of work experience in a related field can help a candidate stand out from other applicants. Certification in related medical fields, like nursing or radiology, or college coursework in anatomy, can also be a plus.

Medical assemblers need computer skills, including the ability to use computer hardware and to navigate common software platforms. They also need to be able to assess and solve problems in a hands-on environment and to communicate their findings to others who may not have the same hands-on experience with a medical device.

Strong communication skills and the ability to multitask are a must. Candidates who demonstrate a commitment to lifelong learning are often in high demand since the devices they are called upon to test and assemble change regularly as medical science advances.
