What to Wear When Interviewing With a Staffing Firm in Minneapolis

If you’ve ever prepared for an interview with an employer, you’ve probably thought long and hard about what to wear. When you decide to work with a staffing firm, you’ll also have an interview with your recruiter.

While this interview is intended to help you improve your skills as much as it is to display your abilities, paying attention to what you wear can help. By dressing carefully for your interview with a staffing firm:

  • you project an image of competence;
  • you demonstrate the interview (and your career) matter to you; and
  • you improve your own comfort and confidence, which can improve your performance.

In other words, it’s just as important to pay attention to your outfit when you interview with a recruiter as it is to dress for success when you interview with an employer. Here’s what to keep in mind:

“Casual” doesn’t mean “vacation.”

Many recruiters encourage interviewees to dress “casually” – but they don’t mean you should show up in your pajamas or torn jeans. Instead, interpret “casual” to mean “business casual,” and dress accordingly: a polo shirt or other collared shirt, slacks or a skirt are an appropriate choice.

Dress for the job you want.

Dressing the same way you’d dress for an interview in your field is always a sound option. If you’re uncertain how best to dress for an employer interview, look up information online or ask others in your field.

It’s always best to err on the side of being too formal. For instance, if you’re uncertain whether you should wear a tie or a suit jacket, wear them. And always make sure your interview clothes are clean and pressed before the day of your interview.

When in doubt, ask the recruiter.

Part of your staffing partner’s job is to answer questions – including questions about what you should wear for interviews. If you’re uncertain about the dress code, don’t be afraid to ask.
